CLASSIC VINTAGE RUGBY SHIRTS

The Story Behind the Classic Rugby Shirt

The rugby shirt has become one of the most recognisable pieces of traditional sportswear.

Originally designed as practical sporting clothing, the rugby jersey developed distinctive features that made it instantly recognisable on the pitch. Heavyweight cotton, strong construction, contrasting colours, stripes, hoops, collars and simple embroidered or appliqué details all became part of the visual language of rugby.

Our Classic collection takes inspiration from that tradition.

Rather than reproducing the shirt of one particular club or national team, the collection celebrates the broader style of the classic rugby shirt — the colours, patterns and details that have made rugby jerseys such an enduring part of sporting culture.

The Traditional Rugby Shirt

Early rugby clothing was designed primarily for playing the game.

Players needed garments that could withstand physical contact, repeated washing and difficult playing conditions. The traditional rugby shirt therefore developed as a robust piece of sportswear, with substantial fabric and reinforced construction.

Over time, the practical rugby jersey also became a way of identifying teams.

Club colours and distinctive patterns made players recognisable on the pitch, while the shirts themselves became closely associated with the identity of the teams wearing them.

That relationship between colour, pattern and sporting identity remains at the heart of the classic rugby shirt today.

Stripes, Hoops and Club Colours

Some of the most familiar rugby shirt designs are remarkably simple.

Horizontal hoops became closely associated with rugby, while vertical and broad stripes provided another way for clubs to establish distinctive colours. Quartered shirts, meanwhile, created bold combinations of contrasting colours.

Collars also became an important part of the design.

Traditional white collars, coloured collars and contrasting collars could completely change the character of a shirt, even when the underlying design remained simple.

Our Classic collection draws on this vocabulary of traditional rugby design, offering everything from solid colours and classic hoops to stripes, quarters and contrasting collars.

The Influence of British Rugby

The visual identity of the modern rugby shirt developed alongside the growth of organised rugby during the nineteenth century.

As rugby spread from schools such as Rugby School to universities, clubs and communities, individual teams developed their own colours and traditions.

By the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, rugby clubs throughout Britain and Ireland were wearing distinctive jerseys that allowed players and supporters to identify their team immediately.

These historic designs have had an influence far beyond the rugby pitch.

The rugby shirt became associated not only with the game itself, but also with traditional British sporting culture.

From the Rugby Pitch to Everyday Clothing

The rugby shirt eventually moved beyond sport.

Its robust construction and distinctive appearance made it popular as casual clothing, particularly among people attracted to traditional sportswear.

The combination of a substantial cotton jersey, bold colours and a simple sporting design gave the rugby shirt an identity that was very different from contemporary fashion.

It could be worn at the weekend, at sporting events or as everyday casual clothing while still retaining its connection with rugby.

That versatility is one of the reasons the classic rugby shirt has remained popular for generations.

What Makes a Rugby Shirt Vintage?

A vintage-inspired rugby shirt is not simply an old-looking garment.

The character comes from a combination of design, fabric, colour and construction.

Traditional rugby shirts were substantial garments, designed for practical use rather than lightweight fashion. Strong colours, simple patterns and durable materials gave them a distinctive appearance.

Our Classic shirts take inspiration from those characteristics.

The collection uses heavyweight slub cotton together with vintage colour dyes and a distressed wash to create a worn-in appearance and feel.

The intention is to capture the character of traditional rugby clothing while creating a shirt that can be worn today.

Classic Rugby Shirt Colours

One of the strengths of the Classic collection is the sheer variety of traditional rugby colours.

The current range includes designs in black, navy, royal blue, sky blue, red, burgundy, green, orange, yellow, white and khaki, alongside combinations incorporating contrasting collars and multiple colours.

This allows the collection to work in two different ways.

For someone looking for a traditional rugby shirt, there are understated solid-colour designs.

For those who prefer the more recognisable visual character of vintage rugby jerseys, there are hoops, stripes, quarters and contrasting colour combinations.

A Modern Take on Old-School Rugby

The aim of the Classic collection is not to reproduce a single historic jersey.

Instead, it draws together the design characteristics that have defined rugby shirts over generations.

The result is a collection of modern garments with a distinctly old-school character — substantial enough to feel like traditional rugby clothing, but designed for everyday wear.

Whether you prefer a simple single-colour shirt, a bold striped design or a traditional hooped jersey, the Classic collection offers a wide range of interpretations of the rugby shirt.

The Black & Blue 1871 Classic Collection

Black & Blue 1871 was built around a fascination with the history and character of rugby.

Our Classic range represents the foundation of that idea.

While our Heritage collections tell the stories of specific clubs, schools, universities, countries and historic teams, the Classic collection focuses on the rugby shirt itself — its colours, patterns, construction and enduring place in sporting culture.

Every design begins with the same idea: create a rugby shirt that looks as though it belongs to the long tradition of the game.

Care instructions:

Rugby Shirt Care Instructions

Wash / Care instructions for number patches

Our number patches are individually embroidered on to the shirts, so to ensure they are stable during the process to keep puckering or stretching from occurring we have to use a backing fabric. This backing fabric is trimmed but left covering the patch (on the inside of the garment). As the backing fabric degrades in the washing machine we recommend that you let the backing degrade with washing and recommend that you do not rip it or cut it out as this can cause damage to the stitching.
