The Story Behind Our USA Heritage Rugby Shirts

Our USA Heritage rugby shirts celebrate the history of American sporting institutions, early football clubs, and the teams that helped shape the United States’ sporting culture.

The collection brings together two distinct strands of American sporting heritage. The first reaches back to some of America’s oldest universities, including Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Dartmouth, Brown and Penn. The second explores the historic sporting clubs and professional teams that emerged around the turn of the twentieth century, including the Syracuse Athletic Club, Rochester Jeffersons, Frankford Yellow Jackets, Columbus Panhandles, Canton Bulldogs and Dayton Triangles.

Together, these designs tell the story of American sport during a period of extraordinary development, when traditional college athletics, rugby, football and other forms of organised sport were developing their own identities.

America’s Early Sporting Heritage

Many of the institutions represented in the USA Heritage collection pre-date the development of modern American football by centuries.

Harvard, founded in 1636, Yale in 1701, Brown in 1764, Dartmouth in 1769, Penn in 1740, and Columbia and Princeton in 1754 are among America’s historic universities. Their long sporting traditions form an important part of the country’s wider athletic heritage.

These institutions also provide an interesting connection between British sporting traditions and the development of organised sport in America. During the nineteenth century, American colleges increasingly established their own sporting cultures, with games influenced by different forms of football and other British sports.

The Birth of American Football

The late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries saw American football develop rapidly from a collection of related football codes into the distinctive sport recognised today.

College football became increasingly organised, while athletic clubs and independent teams emerged across the country. Some of the organisations represented in our collection were involved in this fascinating transitional period.

The Syracuse Athletic Club dates from 1890, followed by the Rochester Jeffersons in 1898 and the Frankford Yellow Jackets in 1899. Other historic teams followed during the early twentieth century, including the Columbus Panhandles, Philadelphia Athletics, Pittsburg Stars, Massillon Tigers and Canton Bulldogs.

Historic American Football Teams

The USA Heritage collection also celebrates teams that became part of early professional American football history.

The Canton Bulldogs, Columbus Panhandles, Dayton Triangles, Chicago Cardinals, Rock Island Independents, Detroit Heralds, Staten Island Stapletons, Pottsville Maroons and Boston Yanks represent different chapters in the development of professional football in the United States.

Many of these teams existed during a period when professional football was still establishing itself, with clubs appearing and disappearing, changing locations and becoming part of the evolving structure of the sport.

Their names, colours and identities provide a fascinating glimpse into American sporting culture during the first half of the twentieth century.

The Black&Blue 1871 USA heritage rugby shirt range is made with a heavyweight slub cotton which gives the shirt a hard wearing yet soft and comfortable finish.

This vintage ‘old school’ shirt combines vintage colour dyes with a distressed wash to produce a nicely worn-in retro look and feel.

Care instructions:

Wash / Care instructions for number patches 

Our number patches are individually embroidered on to the shirts, so to ensure they are stable during the process to keep puckering or stretching from occurring we have to use a backing fabric. This backing fabric is trimmed but left covering the patch (on the inside of the garment). As the backing fabric degrades in the washing machine we recommend that you let the backing degrade with washing and recommend that you do not rip it or cut it out as this can cause damage to the stitching.
