AUSTRALIAN HERITAGE RUGBY SHIRTS

The Story Behind Our Australian Heritage Rugby Shirts

Our Australian Heritage rugby shirts celebrate the history of rugby, football clubs and sporting traditions across Australia and the wider southern hemisphere.

The collection brings together designs inspired by some of the earliest and most distinctive names in Australian rugby, from New South Wales and Queensland in the 1880s to historic clubs including Annandale, Cumberland, Glebe and Newtown during the early twentieth century.

At the centre of the collection is the history of Australian rugby itself. Rugby arrived in Australia during the nineteenth century and quickly developed into an important part of the country’s sporting culture. Clubs and representative teams emerged across the colonies, creating traditions and rivalries that continue to influence Australian rugby today.

The Early History of Australian Rugby

Rugby became established in Australia during the nineteenth century, with organised clubs and representative teams developing in different parts of the country.

New South Wales and Queensland became particularly important centres of the early game. Our collection includes designs inspired by New South Wales 1882, Queensland 1882 and the later New South Wales 1897 side, reflecting the growth of organised rugby during this formative period.

The development of these teams also reflects the geography of Australian rugby. Long distances between communities made touring and representative fixtures an important part of the sporting culture, while provincial and metropolitan clubs developed their own strong identities.

Australia 1899

The Australia 1899 rugby shirt represents an important moment in the development of Australian international rugby.

The late nineteenth century was a period when representative rugby was becoming increasingly organised, with Australian teams beginning to establish an identity of their own.

Our Australia 1899 designs draw inspiration from this early period of Australian rugby and are available in several vintage-inspired variations, including the original crest design.

Historic Australian Rugby Clubs

The Australian Heritage collection also looks beyond representative rugby to the clubs that helped build the game.

Names such as Annandale, Cumberland, Glebe Dirty Reds, Newtown Jets and Past Brothers represent different parts of Australian sporting history.

The early twentieth century saw rugby clubs become deeply rooted in local communities. Clubs developed distinctive colours, names and identities, often reflecting the neighbourhoods and communities they represented.

These club traditions are an important part of Australian rugby heritage and provide a fascinating alternative to the better-known history of international rugby.

Rugby, Football and Australian Sporting Culture

Australian sporting history has always included several different forms of football, with rugby union, rugby league and Australian rules developing their own traditions and identities.

This makes Australian rugby history particularly interesting. Clubs could change codes, competitions could evolve and sporting organisations could develop new identities as the popularity and structure of different forms of football changed.

The names represented in our collection reflect this wider sporting history, connecting today’s heritage designs with the clubs and communities that helped shape Australian sport.

Vintage Australian Rugby Shirts

Black & Blue 1871 recreates these historic designs as vintage-inspired rugby shirts for contemporary wear.

Our heritage rugby shirts are made from heavyweight slub cotton, combining a substantial feel with a comfortable finish. Vintage colour dyes and a distressed wash create an old-school appearance inspired by traditional sporting clothing.

Embroidered details, historic colours and period-inspired designs help give each shirt its own character, while the heavyweight construction makes it suitable for everyday wear.

Care instructions:

Rugby Shirt Care Instructions

Wash / Care instructions for number patches

Our number patches are individually embroidered on to the shirts, so to ensure they are stable during the process to keep puckering or stretching from occurring we have to use a backing fabric. This backing fabric is trimmed but left covering the patch (on the inside of the garment). As the backing fabric degrades in the washing machine we recommend that you let the backing degrade with washing and recommend that you do not rip it or cut it out as this can cause damage to the stitching.
