The Story Behind Varsity Rugby

The Oxford and Cambridge universities occupy a unique place in the history of British sport.

Long before university sport became the highly organised world we know today, students at Oxford and Cambridge were playing a variety of forms of football. During the nineteenth century, the two universities became increasingly influential in the development and standardisation of football codes, including rugby football.

Our Varsity rugby shirts celebrate this period of sporting history, with designs inspired by Cambridge 1872 and Oxford 1872.

The Birth of University Rugby

Rugby football developed rapidly during the nineteenth century, particularly following the publication of the first written laws of Rugby School’s version of the game in 1845.

As the game spread beyond Rugby School, clubs, schools and universities began adopting and adapting the sport.

Oxford and Cambridge were particularly important because their students travelled widely after university and carried sporting traditions into schools, clubs and communities throughout Britain and beyond.

The universities therefore became part of the wider network through which rugby football developed during the Victorian era.

Oxford and Cambridge Rugby

Both universities have long associations with rugby football.

Cambridge’s rugby tradition dates back to the nineteenth century, with the university becoming one of the important centres of the developing game. Oxford similarly established rugby as one of its major sporting traditions.

By the early 1870s, rugby football was sufficiently established at both universities for the idea of an annual contest between them to become a reality.

This period is represented by our Cambridge 1872 and Oxford 1872 rugby shirts.

The First Varsity Match

The first Oxford versus Cambridge rugby match was played in 1872.

The fixture took place at Oxford and marked the beginning of what would become one of the most famous rivalries in university rugby.

The Varsity Match subsequently developed into an annual sporting tradition, attracting considerable interest and becoming an important part of the British rugby calendar.

The significance of the fixture extends beyond the two universities themselves. During the nineteenth century, university rugby was closely connected to the wider development of the sport, as former students went on to establish and play for clubs throughout Britain.

Cambridge 1872

Our Cambridge 1872 rugby shirt celebrates the early history of rugby at the University of Cambridge.

Cambridge’s sporting traditions developed during a period when football was still evolving and there was considerable variation between different versions of the game.

The university’s adoption of rugby football placed it within the rapidly developing network of clubs, schools and institutions that helped establish rugby as an organised sport.

Oxford 1872

Students and former students played an important role in spreading rugby, and Oxford became one of the most recognisable university names associated with the sport.

The Influence of University Rugby

The importance of Oxford and Cambridge rugby goes beyond the annual Varsity Match.

Although the Oxford–Cambridge rivalry is particularly famous, the wider tradition of university sport became an important part of British sporting culture during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries.

Rugby was central to that development, particularly at universities where students played the game alongside their academic studies.

The Varsity Match consequently became more than an individual rugby fixture. It became part of the broader cultural relationship between two historic universities.

The Black&Blue 1871 vintage Varsity rugby shirt is made with a heavyweight slub cotton which gives the shirt a hard wearing yet soft and comfortable finish.

This heritage ‘old school’ shirt combines vintage colour dyes with a distressed wash to produce a nicely worn-in look and feel.

Care instructions:

Wash / Care instructions for number patches 

Our number patches are individually embroidered on to the shirts, so to ensure they are stable during the process to keep puckering or stretching from occurring we have to use a backing fabric. This backing fabric is trimmed but left covering the patch (on the inside of the garment). As the backing fabric degrades in the washing machine we recommend that you let the backing degrade with washing and recommend that you do not rip it or cut it out as this can cause damage to the stitching.
