PHARMACEUTICAL 1880 RUGBY SHIRT
£120.00
Description
The Pharmaceutical 1880 vintage rugby shirt is made with a quality heavyweight slub cotton which gives the shirt a hard wearing yet soft and comfortable retro style finish. This British vintage ‘old school’ shirt combines heritage colour dyes with a distressed wash to produce a nicely worn-in look and feel. The Pharmaceutical 1880 rugby shirt is completed with a white cross embroidered logo and the founding date.

Pharmaceutical R.F.C. founded in 1880. They played at Queen’s Park, five minutes walk from Queen’s Park Station. The members changed at the ‘Canterbury Arms’, West Kilburn. The landlord was Mr W.T. Ecclestone known as “Jolly Jumbo” who was also a trainer of world class prize fighters. As well as staging fights and acting as referee at the Canterbury Arms, he also organised the training requirements of visiting American boxers including Jack Johnson. Jack Johnson was the first black world heavyweight champion. Tommy Burns, the only Canadian born world heavyweight champion and Sam Langford, the greatest boxer never to win a world title. His sporting achievements were overshadowed by his other claim to fame, his weight. He was celebrated as the “Kings Heaviest Subject”. Although a publicity postcard admitted he was still only “the second heaviest man in the world”. But after the death of fellow publican Thomas Longley of Dover. Whose 46 stone frame made him officially the Kings Heaviest Subject, Jolly Jumbo inherited the honorary title weighing in at a mere 38 stone.
