GIPSIES 1871 RUGBY SHIRT

£120.00

SKU: BB1871_RS_Gip Category:

Description

The vintage Gipsies 1871 rugby shirt is made with a heavyweight slub cotton which gives the shirt a hard wearing yet soft and comfortable retro style finish. This vintage ‘old school’ shirt combines heritage colour dyes with a distressed wash to produce a nicely worn-in look and feel. The letter ‘O’ is sewn on to a square patch on the back of the shirt in recognition that letters, as well as numbers, were used in the past. This classic Gipsies 1871 rugby shirt is inspired by the founding members of the RFU.

GIPSIES F.C.

FOUNDER MEMBER OF THE RUGBY FOOTBALL UNION

Gipsies were founded in 1868.

The Gipsies first played on Peckham Rye Common, using changing facilities at the ‘Kings Arms’.

In 1875 they moved on to Putney, and a couple of years later they moved once more, to Wormwood Scrubs.

The club quickly became one of the biggest in London. Its heyday was the early 1870s, when it could boast the membership of over 100.

In their very short life of only 15 years, the Gipsies produced nine England Internationals totalling 21 caps and were more than a match for all the leading clubs of the day – including Blackheath, Clapham Rovers, Harlequins, Queen’s House, Marlborough Nomads, Oxford and Cambridge Universities, Ravenscourt Park and West Kent.

Gipsies disbanded in 1883

3 reviews for GIPSIES 1871 RUGBY SHIRT

  1. Gavin Brown

Lovely retro jersey just like I remember wearing at school, none of that synthetic nonsense, with a great fit too, (makes me look thinner)! Just like other reviews on this site I really like that these shirts are different to the usual reproduction shirts with great attention to detail and finish.
